Regional Training for the Trainers Course on Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries and Extension Methodologies



Course Syllabus

 

Session I: Introduction: Approaches to Fisheries Ecosystem Management
Objectives: At the end of this session all participants will able:
  • To understand the major issues and problems in ecosystem management.
  • To identify factors influencing fisheries and ecosystem management.
  • To distinguish different approaches in ecosystem management.
  • To understand and identify the roles of related sectors in fishery and ecosystem management.
1. Overview and Situation of Fisheries in Southeast Asia, Illegal Fishing and Its Impacts on Marine Ecosystems, Habitats and Sustainable Fisheries
Resource Person : Dr. Somboon Siriraksophon
Outline : An overview of the present situation of fisheries in Southeast Asia; Illegal fishing and its impacts on marine ecosystems and natural habitats in two-way relationship between habitat degradation, fish stocks and fishing: 1. Impacts of fishing on coastal habitats and eco-systems and 2.  Impact of habitat degradation on fisheries; Trend of fisheries development and management in the region; the policies of fisheries management which include the ecosystem approach to fisheries in the Southeast Asian.

2. The Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and Regionalization for Responsible Fisheries
Resource Person : Mr. Bundit Chokesanguan
Outline : An introduction of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. Regionalization for Responsible Fisheries Program. Responsible Fishing Technologies and Practices

3. Concept and Principle of Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries and Sustainable Fisheries Development and its Applicable Indicators
Resource Person : Dr. Simon Funge Smith
Outline : Introduction to the concept and principle of EAFs. Characteristic of fisheries ecosystems including issues and problems in development and management.   Different management options which are available to address these problems including the applicable indicators for sustainable development.  Participants will understand that management of people is the core of successful fisheries management.

4. Case Studies on Fisheries refugia and EAF in Southeast Asia
Resource Person : Dr. John Pernetta
Outline : An introduction to the concept and principle of fisheries refugia, case studies and existing projects that related to fisheries refugia will be presented and highlight on lesson learn, challenges, benefit and difficulties of the fisheries refugia approaches in Southeast Asia.

5. Concept and principle of MPAs, Case Studies and Lesson Learned on MPAs
Resource Person : Mr. Hidenao Watanabe
Outline : An introduction to the concept and principle of Marine Protected Areas, case studies and existing projects that related to MPAs will be presented and highlight on lesson learn, challenges, benefit and difficulties of the MPAs approaches in Southeast Asia.

6. Co-management and Locally Based Approaches to EAFs
Resource Person : Mr. Somnuk Pornpatimakorn
Outline : An introduction to the concept, principle and importance of co-management and locally-based approaches including roles of government sectors, fishery organizations and communities in EAFs management. Case studies that related to the successful ecosystem management projects which applied the use of co-management and locally-base approaches.

Session II: Essential skills for extension works
Objectives: At the end of this session all participants will able:
  • Understand basic extension concepts, approach and methodologies.
  • Have gained competence in program planning and research for extension work.
  • Understand the changing role of extension agents as facilitators and mediators and
  • Have acquired basic skills in planning, facilitating and mediating a fisheries management program.
1. Appropriate Approaches to Fisheries Extension : Extension Concept and Method, Characteristic of Good Extension Agencies
Resource Person : Assoc.Prof. Dr. Savitree Rungsipath and
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supaporn Thaipakdee                   
Outline : An introduction to new approaches to fisheries extension, the development processes of extension approaches, the extension concept, extension methodologies (individual, group and mass methods). And introduction to the roles of extension agents and the importance of community awareness.  Group dynamics and group processes in extension work.

2. Extension Program Planning and Evaluation
Resource Person : Assoc.Prof. Dr. Savitree Rungsipath and
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supaporn Thaipakdee                   
Outline : An introduction to the importance of extension program planning. Extension program planning processes and assignment.

3. Communication, Facilitation and Conflict Resolution Skills
Resource Person : Dr. Suraphon Chandrapatya
Outline : An introduction to communication process and basic psychology in facilitation, and conflict resolution skills, techniques and evaluation.

4. Participatory Researches and Development and Dissemination for Extension Work
Resource Person : Dr. Suraphon Chandrapatya
Outline : An introduction to the goals and processes of research for extension work.  Field work practice, analysis, reporting and conclusion

 


Session III.  Media Production
Objectives: At the end of this session all participants will able:
  • Have enhanced their knowledge in communication techniques.
  • Be familiar with new techniques in media production.
  • Have improved their skills in the use and production of appropriate media in extension work.
  • Be able to chose and design appropriate media for specific extension purposes.
1. Media planning
Resource Person : Mr. Thaweesak Chanloi                   
Outline : An introduction to factors and processes in communication, roles of media in communication, type of communication and media in extension work, advantages and disadvantages of each media. An introduction to the planning process of communication media. Planning of overhead transparencies, flip-charts, posters, sound-slide series, and video productions. Media design and selection planning processes.

2. Production of Simple Media
Resource Person : Mr. Songphon  Chindakhan                   
Outline : An introduction to production techniques of simple media for extension work: production of overhead transparencies, posters, and brochures. Using computers in media design.

3. Production of Audio-visual Media
Resource Person : Mr. Mokkara Phanchuen
Outline : An introduction to the production processes of video/ sound-slide series. Scripting, production techniques and equipments.

4. Media Production; Practical Session
Resource Person : Mr. Thaweesak Chanloi and Team
Outline : Practical sessions on the production of simple and audio-visual media. Assignment and outcome presentation.
