Fuel Saving Onboard Fishing Vessels through Hydraulic/Pneumatic Hybrid Propulsion/Power Technology
Implemented Application of Hydraulic/Pneumatic Hybrid Propulsion System
- Suitable for heavy-duty machineries: Vehicles, Trucks, Vessels, Power Machineries
- Fuel economy between 30-70 %
- Decrease CO2, NOX, and SOX emissions from the engine
- No battery is required by using a hydraulic/pneumatic accumulator
- High regeneration efficiency
- Due to the hydraulic motor direct drive wheel, it produces less mechanical loss
- The high power density is about 5 kW/kg while 0.5 kW/kg for the electric hybrid system
- Lower system and maintenance cost than the electric hybrid system
- The hydraulic regeneration system achieved the better energy available for acceleration than the electric regeneration system
- Accumulator requires a small installation space
- Reduce exhaust gases during acceleration
- Downsizing of main engine 30-50 %
- Efficient storage and reuse of regenerative
- The braking energy of vehicles
How to Apply Hydraulic/Pneumatic Hybrid Propulsion/Power for Fishing Vessel? (Development Perspective)
Operation of series hybrid hydraulic/pneumatic propulsion system:
- Recovery/braking mode: the motor uses the momentum of the flywheel-propeller to pressurize fluid from the low-pressure accumulator and store it in the high-pressure accumulator. This process recaptures about 70 % of the energy lost during braking.
- Short cruising mode: hydraulic pump/motor only uses high-pressure fluid from the high-pressure accumulator to drive the flywheel-propeller.
- Extended cruising mode: After a short cruising mode, pressure in the high-pressure accumulator will drop to a setting point, and the engine will turn on and begin to pressurize fluid from the low-pressure accumulator to drive the pump/motor. The excess pressure from the system will be stored in the accumulator.
Operation of parallel hybrid hydraulic/pneumatic propulsion system:
- Recovery/braking mode: 70% of kinetic energy from flywheel-propeller’s motion recaptured by hydraulic motor and stored in high-pressure accumulator
- Economy mode: energy stored in the accumulator during braking is used alone to accelerate the flywheel-propeller. Once the accumulator is emptied, the engine will begin to perform the acceleration.
- Accelerating mode: flywheel-propeller accelerated by stored energy in the accumulator and the main engine, until the accumulator is emptied, the engine will completely acceleration.
