As the world has been growing rapidly with the fast increase in population, economic competition has intensified. This is also the case with fisheries industry. More and more people are using fishery resources until the use of nature does not balance with its production and fish stocks and other fishery resources are under immense pressure. Under the circumstances, building awareness and capacity among the younger generation and future leaders in the areas of sustainable fisheries resources management becomes very critical and necessary.

The youth of today are going to be the manpower of the future. University students, who will soon finish their studies in the very near future, are especially important since they have some influence in shaping the future of the country and its people.

The Training Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC/TD) organizes a short term training courses for university students. About 46 university students from all over Thailand attend in these training courses. The training courses focus mainly on raising of the awareness and understanding of the young generation on the friendly use and conservation for the sustainable fishery resources as well as on the way of life of people working in fisheries and in fishing communities. At the end of the course, the students will be requested to present the skills and knowledge that they have learned from the training course, and sharing their ideas about the friendly use and conservation for the sustainable fishery Resources.

Objectives

  1. To familiarize students with the principles, concepts and need for the friendly use and conservation for sustainable fishery resources
  2. To impart to students the principles, concepts and techniques in oceanographic background and fishing gear practice in order for them to apply and use them on board.
  3. To enhance students’ experience about fishing communities
  4. To encourage the students to work in team and build the network among them for fishery development in the future.

Course description

The courses consist of presentation/discussion sessions, practical sessions for designing simple but responsible fishing gear and methods as well as shipboard training and oceanographic surveys in Samut Prakan and Rayong Provinces. Moreover, the students also have an opportunity to visit fishing communities and discuss with fishers and fish farmers. The group dynamics and other training techniques will also be used to make the course more effective.

    1.2 Ecosystem approach for sustainable fisheries
    1.3 Fishing gears for sustainable fisheries
    1.4 Fishery oceanography

    2.1 Fishing gear practice

  1. Oceanography and shipboard trainings

    3.1 Fishing operation practice onboard M.V. Plalung 1 at the mouth of the Chaophraya River, Samut Prakan Province
    3.2 Oceanography practice
    3.3 Practice on aquatic animal sampling
    3.4 Fishing operation practice onboard M.V. Plamong 12 in Rayong Province

  1. Visit to the fishing communities

    4.1 Visit to a fishing community and discussion with fishers and fish farmers at the mouth of the Chaophraya River
    4.2 Visit to a fishing community and discussion with fishers in Rayong Province

5.1 The use of Multimedia for mangrove forest learning
