PRACTICAL WORKSHOP ON STOCK AND RISK ASSESSMENTS FOR TUNA IN SOUTH CHINA SEA

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized “The Practical Workshop on Stock and Risk Assessments of Yellowfin Tuna (YFT) and Skipjack Tuna (SKJ) in the South China Sea using software on CPUE standardizations, A Stock-Production Model Incorporating Covariates (ASPIC), Kobe plots and Risk Assessments” from 16 to 20 December 2019, at the Research Institute for Marine Fisheries (RIMF), Hai Phong, Viet Nam. The workshop focused on data situation and quality control, nominal CPUE, standardization of nominal CPUE, ASPIC runs, and risk assessments for Yellowfin and Skipjack Tuna. There were 20 participants from RIMF and SEAFDEC/TD participated in this Workshop. In the end, all participants were expected to understand steps on stock and risk assessments of YFT and SKJ in the South China Sea using user’s friendly (menu-driven) software on CPUE standardizations, ASPIC, Kobe plots, and risk assessments.Also, they should be able to repeat similar exercises and apply for other species. Moreover, a recommendation for future activities on the stock and risk assessment program is one of the outputs.
