WORKSHOP ON MODEL CONSTRUCTION AND STRUCTURE OF COMMERCIAL FISHING GEAR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) served thirty-six fisheries officers from the Marine Fisheries Research and Development Division, Department of Fisheries, Thailand on capacity building of knowledge and practices on model construction and structure of commercial fishing gear by organizing the workshop from 3 to 7 August 2020 at SEAFDEC/TD office, Samut Prakan, Thailand. The lectures on construction, structure and material of trawler, purse seine, and anchovy cast net were imparted to participants. The practical on model construction and repairing of mentioned fishing gears were conducted. After completion of the workshop, the participants were expected to understand and apply the knowledge from the workshop to their work.

ONLINE TRAINING ON FISH HANDLING TECHNIQUES ONBOARD FISHING VESSELS

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized “Online Regional Training of Trainers (TOT) on Fish Handling Techniques Onboard Fishing Vessels from 3 to 7 August 2020 by Google Classroom and Google Meet platform at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand. There were 23 participants who work on fish handling and capable to be a trainer from ASEAN Member States (AMSs) attended in this Online Training. The current situation and problems relevant to fish handling in the respective area were presented and shared by participants. The topics on good practice and hygiene control for fish handling, preservation techniques, and method for onboard fish handling through cold chain management were imparted to the participants.

Moreover, the online demonstration on good practice for fish handling techniques onboard and landing sites, including fish storage and ways to improve fresh quality at the landing site was presented. In the end, the participants are expected to understand and increase their practical skills on the reduction of post-harvest losses, improvement of hygiene and good practice of fish handling onboard to the fishing fleet through transfer and disseminate knowledge and experience from this training as a trainer in their respective country.

TELESEMINAR ON EFFECTIVE METHODS TO PROMOTE FISHERIES RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized the “Teleseminar on Effective Methods to Promote Fisheries Resources Management in Small scale Fisheries” on 29 June 2020. The Teleseminar aims to share information and experience on effective approaches to fisheries resources management in small-scale fisheries to ensure the effective implementation of similar projects in the future. There were 65 participants (38 male and 27 women) attended in this Teleseminar.

This Teleseminar presented the results and outputs of implementation activities under the projects to promote the fisheries resources management of small-scale fisheries in Southeast Asia. The projects have conducted the activities in the selected pilot sites of Lao PDR and Cambodia to support the fishing communities in strengthening the capacity to manage the fishery resources by the community themselves. Moreover, the projects also focus to introduce the alternative job to improve the income of the fishers for better livelihood. There are various kinds of approaches and methods of fisheries management that were implemented in the project area of two (2) countries. After the project end in 2019, the fishing communities were strengthened and could continue to conduct the activities on fisheries resources management.

SEAFDEC-NOAA CAPACITY BUILDING ON EAFM MANAGEMENT TOOLS

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) in collaboration with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) organized the “Online workshop on EAFM management tools” from 20 to 24 July 2020. There were sixteen cores SEAFDEC/TD staff (7 males and 9 females) who are EAFM trainers participated in this online workshop. The online workshop consisted of five (5) sessions as follows; 1) management tools to address core ecological issues, 2) management tools to address core governance issues, 3) management tools to address core human issues, 4) working with scenarios and bringing it all together, and 5) updated SEAFDEC Essential Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (E-EAFM). In the end, it came up with a finalized version of the management tool booklet through increased effectiveness of core SEAFDEC/TD staff to technically support ASEAN Member States in (AMSs) EAFM implementation and management activities.

THE WORKSHOP FOR ADAPTIVE EAFM TO FISHERIES MANAGEMENT IN PHREA PROVINCE, THAILAND

SEAFDEC/TD in collaborative with DOF/Thailand has conducted the workshop to develop the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) plan for Wang Chin District, Phrea Province. The workshop was hold during 24-25 June 2020 at Baan Pang Ngun, Wang Chin District, Phrea Province. Representatives from SEAFDEC/TD provided technical support in applying the problem tree analysis to identify the problems/issues which occur in the area and further develop the EAFM plan for Wang Chin District. The participants were composed of the key fishers and government officers from seven (7) Sub-Districts as well as the local government such as Fisheries Provincial Office, Inland Fisheries Patrol Northern Regional Center (Phitsanulok), Phrae Provincial Agricultural Extension Office, Sub-District Administrative Organization, and Local Fisher Organization. The participants in the workshop is totally 35 persons (25 males, 10 females).

During the workshop participants were actively discussed. The specific problems/issues were identified and prioritized. The main problems that found in the area are the environment degradation, insufficient enforcement, and less income of the communities. Further dealing with these issues and problems, the EAFM plan for the district was developed. The plan is composed of the vision, goals, objectives, indicators & benchmarks, and management actions. In this regard, the EAFM vision for Wang Chin District, Phrae province is “Abundant of forest areas and water resources and the people well-being based on the philosophy of sufficiency economy under the participation of communities and relevance sectors”.
