SEAFDEC PARTICIPATES IN eCDT TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE WORKSHOP

Two (2) representatives from the SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) participated in the “Electronic Catch Documentation and Traceability (eCDT) Technology Showcase for Marine and Freshwater Fisheries Management in the Mekong Region.” This Workshop was organized by the USAID Ocean Partnership project from 14-16 January 2020 in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The objectives of the workshop are 1) to introduce the purpose, costs, and benefits of using eCDT technologies, and share USAID Oceans learning site knowledge and lessons regarding the testing and implementation of these technologies; 2) provide an opportunity for technology company partners to ‘showcase’ their available eCDT technologies with fisheries managers from the Mekong region; and 3) develop country-level national CDT roadmaps for testing and implementing eCDT technologies in Lao PDR. There were thirty (30) participants from Lao PDR National and Provincial fisheries managers, SEAFDEC, representatives from private technology and fishing companies that have developed or implemented the available eCDT technologies and USAID Oceans staff and technical consultants. In this Workshop, SEAFDEC introduced the electronic ASEAN Catch Documentation Scheme (eACDS) as a tool to prevent the entry of fish and fishery products from IUU fishing activities into the Supply Chain. The eACDS activities can be implemented in many good practices such as responsible fishing, labor control (if required), good fish handling, and food safety which link to the good governance and enhance the healthy ecosystem approach, sustainable resources management, and enhance human well-being.

SEAFDEC/TD GIVE SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS AND DONATE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT FOR HOSPITAL

The special activity “SEAFDEC Mini-marathon: Fisherman Run-Save the SEA” was organized on 8 December 2019 by the SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) at TD office, Samut Prakan, Thailand. The main objective will donate incomes from this activity to schools around TD as a scholarship and buying medical equipment for Prasamutchedi Sawathayanon hospital. According to this objective, SEAFDEC/TD gave scholarships to six (6) schools around SEAFDEC/TD, namely: 1) Pomprachunlajomklao School, 2) Wat Trimitwararam School, 3) Wat Khae School, 4) Wat Laem Fa Pha School, 5) Wat Sri Kongkaram School, and 6) Ban Khun Samut Thai School on 10 January 2020. Moreover, three (3) items of medical equipment were donated to Prasamutchedi Sawathayanon hospital on 13 January 2020. The total donation is Baht 318,700 (scholarship is Baht 120,000 and medical equipment is Baht 198,770).

SIAM MARITIME SCHOOL VISITS SEAFDEC/TD

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) welcomed to 10 visitors from Siam Maritime School on 9 January 2020. In this regard, SEAFDEC/TD introduced SEAFDEC’s role and mission in the region. All visitors observed M.V. SEAFDEC and also discussed her duty and role in the region as the main objective of the visit.

Siam Maritime School (SMS) was established on 1 August  2017 by Marine Thai Group and administrators affiliated company of A & Marine (Thai) Co., Ltd., founded on 1982, which supply and service various kinds of navigation and communication equipment, including marine safety equipment for more than 35 years, widely known to all sectors, both in the government and leading private sectors.

SEAFDEC/TD JOINS THE CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) joined Thailand at its 2020 celebration of the National Children’s Day on 11 January at the Prachunlajomklao Navy Dockyard at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. TD put on displayed information and game under the theme of fishery resources conservation. Several groups of children, guided by their chaperons were attracted to the TD activities.

The National Children’s Day in Thailand is traditionally organized on the second Saturday of the year. It largely receives widespread attention to the public, mostly government organizations, especially the Prime Minister, and military that staged their impressive shows for the benefits of children as a contribution to the future of the nation.

THE END PROJECT MEETING OF COMMUNITY-BASED RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN LAO PDR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) convened the End project meeting of the Lao PDR project site on 24 to 25 December 2019 at Vientiane, Lao PDR. The meeting aimed to review and summarize the three (3) years implementation of the project on Facilitating Fisheries Activity Information Gathering through the Introduction of Community-based Resources Management/Co-management, the project site in Khammouane Province and Nam Xouang Reservoir. The total number of participants are 28 persons with balanced numbers of 14 women and 14 men, composed of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries (DLF) Head Quarter officers, Local Government officers (Provincial and District officers) from Khammouane Province and Nam Xouang Reservoir, and Fisheries Management Committee (FMC) Members from the two (2) Project sites including SEAFDEC Secretariat (SEAFDEC/SEC),  SEAFDEC/TD, and Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD). The meeting proceeded with active discussion to share a lesson learned and obtained information to further develop and strengthen the continuous activities in both areas. Moreover, the expected result and recommendation from the workshop can guide the inland fisheries management in other areas of Lao PDR.
