RAISING AWARENESS OF GENDER IN FISHERIES MANAGEMENT

The SEAFDEC Technical Working Group (TWG) on Human Welfare for Gender and Labor for USAID Oceans Fisheries Partnership participated in “The Workshop of Raising Awareness of Gender Equity and Women Empowerment in Fisheries Management in General Santos and Sarangani Bay Area, Philippines” from 21 to 23 February 2019 in General Santos, Philippines. This Workshop was organized by USAID Oceans Fisheries Partnership project. There were eight (8) organizations from the Government of the Philippines participated in the Workshop to obtain information from gender analysis in Tuna fisheries value chain and provide them the commitment to support intervention on Raising Awareness of Gender Equity and Women Empowerment in Fisheries Management in General Santos and Sarangani Bay Area, Philippines.

FISHERIES KEY STAKEHOLDERS WORKSHOP IN LAO PDR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) under the project of “Human Resource Development” organized “The Workshop on Key Stakeholders’ Engagement and Investigate the Current Situation which Lead to the Low Income of the Fishers of the Project” in Lao PDR from 21 to 23 February 2019. There were 24 participants who are fishery officers and key stakeholders in fisheries participated in this Workshop. The Workshop aims to enhance knowledge and skill development on problems and situation identifications which are relevant to fisheries management for the development of fisheries management plan through encouraging the key stakeholders to participate in fisheries activities.

PADDY-CUM-FISH CULTURE SEMINAR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) in cooperation with the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Thailand organized the “One day seminar in sharing knowledge and lessons learnt on paddy-cum-fish culture” on 15 February 2019 at the SEAFDEC Secretariat, Bangkok, Thailand. There were 30 participants including researchers from DOF, farmers from Amnat Charoen, Phra Nakon Si Ayutthaya and Yasothon provinces including SEAFDEC Secretariat and TD staff participated in this seminar. This seminar aimed to compile knowledge experience and lessons learnt on the paddy-cum-fish culture and compile useful idea, points of view and way forwards to improve/develop the appropriate and effective pattern and methods in evolution of paddy-cum-fish culture in Thailand. For the next step, SEAFDEC and DOF will cooperate and set-up the framework and plan of activities to conduct the paddy-cum-fish culture program in Thailand.

APPROPRIATE NEW TRAWL AND PURSE SEINE FISHING VESSEL DESIGN MEETING WORKSHOP

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized “The Meeting Workshop on Appropriate New Trawl and Purse Seine Fishing Vessel Design on 18 February 2019, aimed to present new fishing vessel design and discuss on appropriate trawl and purse seine fishing vessel design. There were 45 participants from Thailand fishery association, fishery association from Samut Sakorn, Pattani, Trat province through Shipyard/Ship building, Federal of Thai industrials and etc. attended in this Meeting. At the end, the Meeting came up with conceptual from the fleet on an appropriate new purse seine fishing vessel design based on energy efficiency and safety at sea of fishing vessel operation included improving good working/ living condition on board.

ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES VISITS TD

There were twelve delegates from the Iloilo State College of Fisheries (ISCOF) paid an official visit to SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) on 25 January 2019. In this occasion, the roles played by SEAFDEC and TD on the regional fisheries development and significant achievements were presented to our delegates. Subsequently, a tour to observe TD facilities such as fishing and engineering workshop, engine and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) simulator, and M.V.SEAFDEC 2 was conducted.

The Iloilo State College of Fisheries (ISCOF) is a public college in the Philippines. It is mandated to provide higher technological, professional and vocational instruction and training in fisheries, science, as well as short-term technical or vocational courses in fisheries. Moreover, it is also mandated to promote research, advance studies, extension work, and leadership in its areas of specialization. Its main campus is located in Barangay Tiwi, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo. Finally, there are other campuses in Barotac Nuevo, Dingle, Dumangas and San Enrique.
