On 22 November 2018, the SEAFDEC Secretary-General and Chief of Training Department (TD), Dr. Kom Silapajarn gave warm welcomed to Mr. Luck Wajananawat, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives for his official visit to the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD). According to this, Dr. Kom presented the role and activities of SEAFDEC in the region such as fisheries resources and marine environment survey by M.V.SEAFDEC2, promotion on Indian Mackerel management in the Gulf of Thailand, Thai modern fishing boat, implementing on fish passage in Thailand and so on. Moreover, the honorable guest visited M.V. SEAFDEC, the research vessel of SEAFDEC and R.V. Chulabhorn, the research vessel of the Department of Fisheries, Thailand.
TD CONDUCTS THE REGIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON FISH HANDLING TECHNIQUE APPLICABLE TO VARIOUS FISHING OPERATION IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized the Regional Training Course on Fish Handling Technique Applicable to Various Fishing Operations in Southeast Asia from 19 to 23 November 2018 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand.There were ten (10) fisheries officers from SEAFDEC Member Countries, namely: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam attended in this training. The Training course aims to transfer appropriate hygienic environmental/user friendly fish handling tools and simple techniques applied to maintain quality of catch, exchange views/details on practical skills and concepts related to reduction of post-harvest losses for fisheries in the region, including fish handling technique, ice storage, preservation techniques, transportation of fishery products, and promote food safety and minimize post-harvest losses in catching, storing and transportation process of fish. After this training course, the participants were able to enhance knowledge and practical skills on the reduction of post-harvest losses which will help reinforce extension and promotion of activities in their respective countries and improve awareness of hygiene and good practice of fish handling on-board the Southeast Asian fishing fleet.
CAPACITY BUILDING ON ENGINEERING DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, ECOLOGY, AND MONITORING OF FISH PASSAGE
The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Department of the Interior (DOI) of United States and Mekong River Commission (MRC) organized the Fish Passage Engineering Design, Construction, Ecology, and Monitoring Workshop from 13 to 16 November 2018 at TD, Samut Prakan province. There were sixty participants from SEAFDEC Member Countries participated in this workshop. The workshop provided technical engineering concepts needed for the selection of appropriate fish passage designs for specific sites, designing fish passes to maximize fish passage success, and construct cost-effective structures with long lifespans; information on developing fish passage criteria, identifying target species understanding river hydrology, evaluating fish swimming abilities, and designing monitoring programs. After the workshop, the participants were able to have an improved understanding of migratory fish ecology, understand the principles of fish passage design, developed a range of fish passage concepts for a given site, critically selected an appropriate entrance location; understanding good and bad designs, critically select an appropriate fish passage design, understand the importance of monitoring programs and the good and bad construction practices and oversight.
SEAFDEC PARTICIPATES IN THE 11TH RPOA-IUU MEETING
Two SEAFDEC staff participated in “The 11th Regional Plan of Action to Promote Responsible Fishing Practicesincluding Combating IUU Fishing in the Region (RPOA-IUU) Coordination Committee Meeting” from 13 to 15 November 2018 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Meeting was attended by nine (9) RPOA-IUU participating countries (namely: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam). The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) attended the meeting as an Advisory Body to the RPOA-IUU. Moreover, the representative from SEAFDEC presented “The progress of SEAFDEC initiatives toward the support on implementation of the RPOA-IUU in the Southeast Asian Region.” The Meeting came up with updated progress on implementation of work plan 2018 and development of work plan for 2019 including IUU-related issues at the regional and international level.
TEN STAFF FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE SERVICE VISITS TD
Ten staff from the Department of Science Service visited SEAFDEC Training Department (TD), Samut Prakan province on 12 November 2018. The aimed of visiting TD was to increase knowledge about waste water treatment in M.V. SEAFDEC and M.V.SEAFDEC 2. Moreover, the visitors toured around TD facilities such as Fishing and Engineering workshops.
