TWG OF SEAFDEC JOIN GENDER ANALYSIS INCEPTION MEETING IN PHILIPPINES

SEAFDEC in cooperation with USAID has been implemented the project of USAID Ocean and Fisheries partnership, aim to strengthen regional cooperation to promote sustainable fisheries across Southeast Asia’s diverse marine ecosystem. This project target to support and engagement to implement a financial sustainable Catch document treatability system and complementary sustainable fisheries management plans in regional demonstration for region, nation and site level. One component of this program is “Human welfare” with issue on gender and labor was integrated in this program.

In this regards, Technical working group (TWG) on human welfare from the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) participated in the “Gender Analysis Inception Workshop and Value Chain Mapping of Tuna Fisheries” from 9 to 12 January 2017 in General Santos Area, Philippines. This workshop focus on the process of preparing for data collecting, training enumerator for collect data with quality and introduce Open Data kit (ODK) application for data collecting to reduce the data input step.

SEAFDEC EMPHASIZES ON GENDER-EQUITABLE FOR SMALL-SCALE FISHERIES

SEAFDEC emphasize to promote on gender-equitable for small-scale fisheries, therefore a staff from SEAFDEC/TD and a staff from SEAFDEC/SEC participated in “Expert Workshop on gender-equitable small-scale fisheries in the context of the implementation of the SSF Guidelines” which organized by FAO in FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy from 28 to 30 November 2016. The workshop presented and discussed a draft implementation guide on how to practically apply the SSF Guidelines in relation to gender issues, aimed to support on awareness raising, advocacy and capacity development activities on the application of the relevant principles of the SSF Guidelines, as well as development and implementation of gender-sensitive sectoral and cross-sectoral policy frameworks and investment plans and programs. At the end, the workshop came up with the way forward on support countries in the gender-reviews of their policies, strategies, use gender guide in capacity development at country/regional level, continue work on gender-disaggregated statistics to improve knowledge and support policies and monitoring and explore development of repository of case studies/good practices to support advocacy and capacity development.

M.V.UMITAKA MARU VISIT AND DOCK AT TD

Under Memorandum of Understanding between SEAFDEC and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT), M.V.Umitaka Maru has been docked at the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) pier from 25 to 30 November 2016, aims to take TUMSAT cadets study trip in Thailand. In this occasion, TD welcomed thirty four cadets on 25 November 2016. TD presented introduction of SEAFDEC and activities. Moreover, the cadets visited and observed TD facilities such as fishing and engineering workshop, M.V.SEAFDEC and TD library. Moreover, 56 students from Chulalongkorn University, 49 students from Kasetsart University, 19 students from Burapha University, Bangsaen Campas,  and 48 students from Burapha University, Chanthaburi Campas paid a visit M.V.Umitaka Maru and TD facility on 26 November 2016.

M.V.Umitaka Maru is training and research ship of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT). She implements practical training on board and investigation and research in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, the Antarctic Ocean, etc., as well as teaches the students of Advanced Course of Fisheries advanced marine technology through ocean navigation.

THE STUDENTS FROM BURAPHA UNIVERSITY VISIT AND STUDY TRIP IN TD

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) welcomed two lecturer and forty eight students from the Faculty of Marine Technology, Burapha University, Chanthaburi Campas from 26 to 27 November 2016. TD presented introduction of SEAFDEC and activities in each department through opened TD facilities such as fishing and engineering workshop, M.V.SEAFDEC and M.V.SEAFDEC 2 for students visiting. Moreover, the students practiced on net and knot repairing in the second day. The knowledge which students gain will be enhanced their experience in fisheries field.

THE AMBASSADOR OF SWEDEN PAID VISIT TO TD

H.E.Staffan Herrstrom, the Ambassador of Sweden to the Kingdom of Thailand and his party paid an official visit to SEAFDEC Training Department on 24 November 2016. At the welcoming reception, SEAFDEC Secretary-General and Chief of TD Dr. Kom Silapajarn led all SEAFDEC staff to greet the Ambassador. The role played by SEAFDEC and TD on the regional fisheries development and significant achievements were presented to the honorable guest. Subsequently, a tour to observe TD facilities such as fishing workshop, engineering workshop, M.V.SEAFDEC and on board visit M.V. SEAFDEC 2 was conducted.
