Online Regional Workshop on Gender Integration in Small Scale Fisheries

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) in collaboration with the Sustainable Fish Asia (SUFIA) Local Capacity Development Activity/USAID conducted an Online Regional Workshop on Gender Integration in Small Scale Fisheries in Southeast Asia from 28 to 30 September 2021. The training aimed to impart and exchange knowledge, skills, and experiences on gender integration in fisheries projects to ensure project implementers apply gender inclusive approaches in promoting human well-being in fisheries communities. The training was attended by 55 representatives, 35 female and 20 males, from the ASEAN Member States (AMSs) namely: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand, and personnel from SEAFDEC Secretariat, SEAFDEC/AQD, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, SEAFDEC MFRDMD, and SEAFDEC/TD.

The training sessions covered principles and approaches on integrating gender and social inclusion in the whole project cycle to ensure gender is mainstreamed and achieve gender equity and equality in fisheries development and project management. As an exercise to apply what they learned from the sessions, participants developed sample country action plans to address existing gender issues faced in their areas, which included implementation and monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) plans. Participants were encouraged to integrate these action plans into their existing tasks within their organizations and extend their learnings from the workshop among their peers. As a next step, participants recommended further promotion of gender integration in small scale fisheries in Southeast Asia, acknowledging that gender awareness and capacity building are needed at all levels to improve gender sensitivity and responsiveness so initiatives in small scale fisheries will be more gender and socially inclusive.

Teleworkshop on Development and Improvement of RFVR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized the “Teleworkshop on Development and Improvement of Regional Fishing Vessels Record (RFVR) for Combating IUU fishing in the Southeast Asia” from 28 to 30 September 2021 via zoom platform. The aims to 1) reviewing, exchanging and updating the information on vessel registration and fishing license through the implementation activities to combat IUU fishing among AMSs, and 2) improving the RFVR database management and operations through the introduction and demonstration of the use of template/format of CSV/Excel file to upload the KDEs to the RFVR database. There were twenty (20) participants who are SEAFDEC’s national RFVR focal points and fisheries officer of AMSs attended in this Teleworkshop. In the end, the Teleworkshop came up with updated information of vessels registration and fishing license through the implementation of activities to combat IUU fishing among AMSs, and understanding of the introduced template/format for uploading the KDEs of RFVR database in order to get such real-time information by AMSs.  Updated information of vessels registration and fishing license through the

The Fifth Fisheries Refugia Project Steering Committee Meeting

The Fifth Virtual Meeting of the Project Steering Committee (PSC5) for the SEAFDEC/UNEP/GEF Project on Establishment and Operation of the Regional System of Fisheries Refugia in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand (Fisheries Refugia Project) was organized on 3 September 2021 via zoom platform by the Project Coordinating Unit (PCU) of the project. The Meeting discussed on the progress of works, policy to support project’s activities, financial, etc. There were 51 participants (21 male and 30 female) who are Project Steering Committee Members from six participating countries, UNEP Project Task manager, the Secretary-General of the SEAFDEC, Policy and Program Coordinator from SEAFDEC Secretariat office, Project Director, and PCU staff including observers from each national lead agency and technical officers from SEAFDEC/TD.

SEAFDEC is regional execution of the Fisheries Refugia Project in partnership with the government agencies responsible for fisheries in the six participating countries namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. The project is comprised of four components as follows 1) establishment of operational management at 14 priority fisheries refugia, with community-based refugia management plans being key outputs, 2) strengthening the enabling environment for the formal designation and operational management of refugia, 3) strengthening information management and dissemination of best practices in integrating fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, and improving community acceptance of area-based approaches to fisheries and coastal environment management, and 4) strengthening cross-sectorial coordination for integrated fisheries and environmental management.

Workshop on Data Validation on Gender Integration in Inland Fisheries in Buri Ram Province, Thailand

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Thailand conducted the Workshop on Data Validation on Gender Integration in Inland Fisheries in Buri Ram Province, Thailand from 20 to 22 September 2021. The workshop aims to report and recheck the results of the data analysis of Aquatic Animal Food Bank of Subsomboon group, Buri Ram Province including strengthening knowledge on the gender concept to all stakeholders in the community site. Due to the pandemic of COVID-19, the workshop was conducted virtually from SEAFDEC and DOF central office in conjunction with the face-to-face stakeholder workshop at Subsomboon community, Buri Ram Province. There were 73 people (53 female and 20 male) who participate in the workshop which is composed of local participants, DOF officers, and SEAFDEC staff. The result found that local participants understood the general concept of sex and gender and they all adopted the result of the study on Gender Integration in Aquatic Animal Food Bank of Subsomboon group in Buri Ram Province, Thailand. Moreover, the workshop came up with the action plan for further development of the Aquatic Animal Food Bank of Subsomboon group.

SEAFDEC/TD Participation in Aquatic Science Special Event Meeting

Two representatives from the SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), Mr. Isara Chanrachkij, Head of Project Planning and Management Division and Mr. Krit Phusirimongkol, Training and Extension Officer participated in the Online Meeting on the Aquatic Science Special Event which organized by the Department of Aquatic Science, Faculty of Science, Burapha University, Chonburi Campus on 20 August 2021. This special event aimed to increase knowledge, understanding, and preparation on job training of university students. The resource persons were invited from fisheries government and organization agencies through private company. In this occasion, Mr. Krit was invited as resource persons to present and share information on role and implementation activities of SEAFDEC/TD in the region including information of job training that SEAFDEC/TD open for internship student.
