REGIONAL TRAINING ON OPTIMIZING ENERGY USED AND IMPROVING SAFETY IN FISHING ACTIVITIES

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized “The Regional Reviews Training Program on Optimizing Energy Used and Improving Safety in Fishing Activities” from 5 to 9 August 2019 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand. There were seventeen participants from SEAFDEC Member Countries who have experiences and responsibilities of optimizing energy used and safety at sea attended in this training.  Furthermore, the training introduced technical information on the current situation, existing methods and techniques for optimizing energy used, and an overview of safety at sea for fishing activities. The lessons learnt and case study of several methods and techniques at regional and national levels were discussed. Moreover, field trip and observation at the pilot vessel emphasized on energy optimization used and safety at work were carried out in Pattani Province, Southern part of Thailand through observation on demonstration in order to monitor the consumption of fuel used during engine vessel operation. At the end, the participants were expected to transfer and utilize the knowledge and information on energy saving and safety at sea for capture fishery through strengthen on threats, issues and the way forward for the promotion of optimizing energy used and safety at sea in capture fishery and fishing fleet.

STUDY VISIT FOR INITIAL IDEA TO INCREASE INCOME FOR WOMEN IN FISHING COMMUNITY

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized study visit and observation program aims to give the initial idea to increase income for Ban Nai Nang community, Krabi Province from 5 to 9 August 2019. There were twenty-five participants (20 women and 5 men) who are Krabi provincial fisheries officers (4 officers) and 21 participants from Ban Nai Nang community, Krabi Province. The participants visited and observed activities of local dessert women group in Phetchaburi Province, fish processing at Nakhon Sawan Province, and honey bees culturing in Supa Bee Farm (private farm) and Agricultural Technology Promotion Center which encourage knowledge and promotion of insects economic in Chiangmai Province. This activity is a part of the “Application of the EAFM” in Ban Nai Nang community, Krabi Province, Thailand that has been conducted by SEAFDEC/TD which supported by the USAID-DOI budget.

CAPACITY BUILDING ON PORT STATE MEASURES IN ASEAN

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized “The Regional Training on Port State Measures (PSM) implementation for Inspectors in Southeast Asia in collaboration with partners such as The Department of Fisheries (DOF) Thailand, Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), Food And Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from 22 to 26 July 2019 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand. There were forty participants (11 women and 29 men) who engaged in and conduct PSM and/or port control activities at inspection level from ASEAN Member States (AMSs) excluding Lao PDR, as well as non-AMSs such as India and Sri Lanka attended in this training. The training focused to update current situation on inspection activities for port control and PSM from AMSs through sharing information on implementation on PSM inspection from our partners. The training also provided study trip to observe PSM inspection at port activities for tuna carrier vessel. At the end, the participants were expected to better understand on implementation of PSM, and increasing of knowledge, skill and experience on inspection to support Port State Measures and port control implementation.

The Experts Workshop on Finalization of the Practical Guide for Gender Analysis in Small-Scale Fisheries and Aquaculture in Southeast Asia

The Experts Workshop on Finalization of the Practical Guide for Gender Analysis in Small-Scale Fisheries and Aquaculture in Southeast Asia was conducted from 10 to 11 July 2019 at SEAFDEC/Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), Samut Prakan, Thailand. There were 40 participants (32 Females, 8 Males) from SEAFDEC Member Countries, renowned experts from regional partners, the SEAFDEC Gender Focal Persons (SGFP), SEAFDEC relevant staff and members of the Regional Fisheries Policy Network (RFPN) who were almost the same participants from the previous expert consultation workshop on gender last year August 2018. The experts workshop aimed to revise and finalize “the practical guide for gender analysis in small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in Southeast Asia” under categorized by thematic areas in accordance with the SSF Guidelines and developed methods and tools for gender analysis, including to provide gender-sensitive organization. Moreover, the ways forward and usage of this practical guide for application in the ASEAN Member States (AMSs) were discussed at the workshop.

The Workshop on the Development of the Action Plan for SEAFDEC Gender Strategy

The one (1) day Workshop on the “Development of the Action Plan for SEAFDEC Gender Strategy” was conducted on 9 July 2019 at SEAFDEC/Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), Samut Prakan, Thailand. There were a total of 31 participants (22 Females, 9 Males), as the following:  SEAFDEC Gender Focal Persons (SGFP) from Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD), Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD), Marine Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/MFRDMD), Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), and Secretariat (SEAFDEC SEC),  as well as Division and section heads of SEC and TD, and members of Regional Fisheries Policy Network (RFPN) from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The workshop shared the knowledge and opinion of SEAFDEC staff in order to develop the Action plan to implement the SEAFDEC Gender strategy. The result of the workshop came up with common activities and indicators to follow up SEAFDEC Gender strategies. Moreover, the Term of References (TOR) for SGFP of each department was finalized to assign the responsibility of SGFP to assist all SEAFDEC staff and its project on gender integration.
