TRAINING ON AGE DETERMINATION BY USING VERTEBRA FOR SHARKS AND RAYS

The Training course on Age Determination by Using Vertebra for Sharks and Rays was organized by the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) from 29 April to 1 May 2019 at TD office, Samut Prakan Province, Thailand. The training aims to enhance human resource development on age determination for formulating growth rates of sharks and rays to stock assessment researchers of SEAFDEC Member Countries (MCs) through attaining the more reliable Yield per Recruit (YPR) model and strengthen a network of stock assessment scientist in the region. Totally, there were 35 participants from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam attended in this training. At the end of training course, the participants were expected to understand on age determination by annual ring technique through increasing the number of growth rate information of sharks and rays by species in their countries.

JAPANESE INTERNSHIP STUDENT JOINS TD ACTIVITIES

The second year student from master’s course of Graduated School of Global Food Resource, Hokkaido University, Ms.Keio Takano joins with the SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) activities as internship student. The main objectives of her internship at SEAFDEC/TD are interview survey and data analysis on the fishery evaluation on Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries in Kep Province, Cambodia which joins with TD project. Moreover, she would like to gain experiences of SEAFDEC activities such as observation on monitoring and evaluation of co-management project at Num Oon Dam, Sakon Nakhon Province, Thailand and also attend the Sixty-second Short-term Training Course for University students which organize by TD during her stay from 29 April to 21 June 2019. The Japanese internship student is an activity under Memorandum of Understanding between SEAFDEC and Hokkaido University.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE FISHERIES MANAGEMENT WORK PLAN FOR LAO PDR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized “The Workshop on Development of the Fisheries Management Work Plan for Aung Kra Dein, Bolicunsei Province, Lao PDR” from 22 to 26 April 2019 in Thailand as well as to include the study visit and observation program, such as: 1) the inland fisheries management case study of Keng Krajarn, Phetchaburi Province, and 2) inland fish aquacultures (breeding, nursery and culture) seeding restocking and inland fish processing in Ayutthaya Province. There were 9 participants (3 men and 6 women) from Aung Kra Dein joined in this workshop. The workshop expected that all participants can initially compile the available background/baseline information on fishery resources, habitats, status and livelihoods of fisherfolk communities, establish legal basis for management plan and implementation through draft management plan for the fisheries management action for their province.

CAPACITY BUILDING ON GENDER SENSITIVITIES IN INDONESIA

The Capacity Building on Gender Sensitivity and Responsiveness: National Marine Resources and Fisheries Gender Roadmap Workshop were organized from 26 to 27 March 2019 in Jakarta, Indonesia by USAID Oceans Fisheries Partnership project in cooperation with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The workshop aims to capacity building on gender sensitivities and responsiveness through review of gender perspective in marine and fisheries roadmap in Bitung which is the project site for implementation of USAID Ocean Fisheries Partnership project. In the Workshop, Technical Working Group (TWG) on Human welfare of SEAFDEC also presented lessons learned from gender analysis tools in marine resources and fisheries: SEAFDEC Gender studies in coastal fisheries in Southeast Asia
