The USAID Oceans Third Technical Working Group Planning Workshop

The Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans) in collaboration with the Department of the Interior (DOI) of United States and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) organized “The Third Technical Working Group Planning Workshop” from 16 to 18 July 2018, in Bangkok, Thailand. A total of Ninety-three (93) participants from USAID Oceans, the representatives from ASEAN Member Countries (including USAID Oceans Technical Working Group members), SEAFDEC, CTI-CFF, USAID’s Regional Development Mission for Asia, USAID’s Office of Forestry and Biodiversity, USAID’s Asia Bureau, U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Department of the Interior, Tetra Tech ARD, and USAID Oceans’ project staff and implementing partners participated in this Workshop. The Workshop came up with 1) TWG endorsement of a process and outline related to the development of proposed set of regional guidelines for the ASEAN-wide implementation of eCDT systems; 2) documented input from TWG members regarding current and future regional priorities that will inform the future direction of USAID Oceans during the second half of the project life span, as well as US-supported development initiatives beyond USAID Oceans; and 3) documented input on USAID Oceans’ Year Four Activity Work Plan.

TD JOINS THE NATIONAL FISHERIES EXHIBITION IN THAILAND

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) joined the Thai Department of Fisheries in staging a fisheries exhibition at the annual national fair “Pramong Nomklao” organized this year at the Future Park Department Store in Pathumthani Province, just north of Bangkok. At the 10-day exhibition beginning 29 June to 8 July 2018, TD presented the “Fish Enhancing Devices (FEDs) for Fisheries Resources Conservation” as a research project which was conducted and promoted by TD. In this regard, the model of FEDs was shown for the audiences for better understanding. Moreover, there was the distribution of various technical publications, brochures, VCDs and fishery-related souvenirs to the audiences, and the SEAFDEC visibility was promoted.
 

CAPACITY BUILDING ON FISH HANDING TECHNIQUES IN VIET NAM

The SEAFDEC Training Department organized “The On-site Training Course on Proper Fish Handling Techniques Applicable to Local Fishing Vessels” in Kien Giang Province, Viet Nam from 27 to 28 June 2018. There were 30 participants who are relevant to the fisheries sector trained in this course. The simple fish handling technique and implementing of fish handling technology such as icing technique, ice sweater chilling system and so on were imparted to participants. At the end, the participants were expected that they should be able to enhance knowledge and practical skills on the reduction of post-harvest losses which include: 1) importance of appropriate fish handling, including good fish handling practices and hygiene on-board, 2) technical information and knowledge related to preserve fish for direct human consumption and to serve at a premium level, and 3) reduce post-harvest losses and trash fish from unloading, storage, and transportation on-board till unloading at landing site.

THE STUDENTS AND LECTURERS FROM WALAILUK UNIVERSITY VISITS TD

There were Thirty-two (32) students and lecturers from Walailuk University who learned in the Marine and Coastal Resources Management Technology visited the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) on 21 June 2018. The aimed of visiting TD are to increased knowledge and experienced of students outside the study room. TD roles and activities were presented through the lecture on “The Oceanographic Survey in Southeast Asian Region” was imparted to all students. Moreover, the students had a chance visiting TD facilities such as fishing workshop, engine workshop and M.V.SEAFDEC.

TD ORGANIZES EXHIBITION IN MARINE SCIENCE SEMINAR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized the exhibition in marine science seminar from 18 to 20 June 2018 at Chonburi Province, Eastern part of Thailand. The theme of exhibition, TD presented collaboration activities on research survey in Antarctic by TR/V Umitaka Maru. A research staff from TD joined in this research survey. The physical and biological oceanography surveys were conducted in the Antarctic Ocean.  Moreover, the promotion of organization was also conducted through dissemination of SEAFDEC technical document, magazine and so on.
