University Students from Thailand and Japan join the EAFM Training Course

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) has conducted the Short-term Training Course on Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management( EAFM)  for University Students at Training Department, Samut Prakan, Thailand from 12 to 22 June 2018. There were 30 students from Thailand and Japan participated in this training course. They are  studying in fishery, marine science, or other related major subjects. This training course aimed to gain knowledge and better  understand the concept and principles of Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management, basic fishery oceanography survey and small-scale fishing gears, to get experiences in assembling fishing gears and oceanography, so that they can operate during onboard practices, to get involve on the way of life in fishing communities around coastal area, and to build-up network among students from different universities as well as to strengthen the student’s attitude on the team work approach.

Furthermore, the training course is composed of in- class lectures and discussions on fishery management in Thailand; Fishery management in Japan; Socio-economic data survey in fishing communities; Basic fishery oceanographic survey; etc., in practical session about rope; knotting; and simple fishing gears construction, in field trip surveys on fishing communities in Rayong province, Thailand, and shipboard training for responsible fishing demonstrations and operations and basic fishery oceanographic survey.

INTRODUCTION OF EACDS AND CONSULTATION VISITS ON PSM IN MYANMAR

The SEAFDEC Secretariat and Training Department in collaboration with Department of Fisheries, Myanmar organized the Consultation Meeting on Introduction of the Electronic Asian Catch Documentation Scheme (eACDS) and Consultation Visit on Port State Measures from 11 to 14 June 2018 in Yangon, Myanmar. There were Forty (40) participants from several stakeholders such as fishermen, fish buyers, fish processor, importer, exporter, and government officers attended this Meeting. In this Meeting, SEAFDEC presented the introduction and demonstrations of overall system on e-ACDS including issues of catch declaration, movement documentation, catch certification, processing statement, and re-export certification. In addition, introduction of Regional Fishing Vessels Record (RFVR) database was also presented. In the second day, the Consultation visit was conducted , the DOF Myanmar presented existing fishing licensing and Port Control. The Consultation discussed with the stakeholders about the Port State Measures in Myanmar. Moreover, the observation of two (2) fishing ports was conducted, namely: Viking Marine Product Trading company and Shwe Zin Yaw Hein Manufacturing Co. Ltd. which are certified by European Union.

Training of Trainers for Sustainable Fisheries Management

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized the three (3) days “Training of Trainers for Sustainable Fisheries Management” from 5 to 7 June 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand. There were nine (9) Fisheries officers participants from the Department of Fisheries, Thailand who have the capacity to be a trainer. All of them were selected from the Training Course on Sustainable Fisheries Management which was conducted in May this year. At the end, the participants were expected to strengthen understanding on the sustainable fisheries management, present sessions individually, in pairs/mini groups, practice running energizers and share their own energizers, practice reviews, facilitate pair work, small group work, role play, and plenary. These are of great help for them to be a trainer for their Department.

Training Workshop on Sharks and Rays Stock Assessment

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized the “Training Workshop on Sharks and Rays Stock Assessment by Using YPR Model” at Training Department, Samut Prakan, Thailand from 4 to 9 June 2018. There were 24 participants from SEAFDEC Member Countries participated in the workshop. This training course aimed to enhance human resource development on stock assessment of sharks and rays to researchers of SEAFDEC Member Countries, increase the number of stock assessment information for sharks and rays by species in the region, and establish a network of stock assessment scientists in the Southeast Asian Region. At the end of this training course, the participants were expected to understand on stock assessment by using Yield Per Recruit (YPR) Assessment Model through increasing the number of stock assessment information of sharks and rays by species, and a network of stock assessment researcher. Finally, YPR assessment model is commonly used to test alternative management strategies when historical information on recruitment for the fish population being studied is limited. Like many other types of fisheries models, a primary assumption implied in YPR models is randomness in the distribution of fish and effective fishing efforts throughout the fishery.

Capacity Building on Sustainable Fisheries Management for Thai Fisheries Officers

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized the “Training Course on Sustainable Fisheries Management” in Surat Thani, Thailand from 14 to 18 May 2018. There were fifteen participants from the Department of Fisheries, Thailand who work and involve in fisheries management plan participated in this training. This training course aimed to improve and develop skills of participants on management plan which support for fisheries management activities. The training curriculums were focused on holistic approach to fisheries management, reducing and management of conflict between stakeholder, etc. At the end, the participants were expected to apply knowledge, skills and experience from this training on their job for sustainable fisheries.
