The Practical Workshop on Tuna Stock Assessment in Sulu and Sulawesi Seas

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized the Practical Workshop on Tuna Stock Assessment for Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Tuna and Skipjack Tuna Resources in Sulu and Sulawesi Seas (SSSs) which focused by CPUE Standardization, Stock Assessments (ASPIC), and Kobe Plot (Stock Status Trajectory Plot). The Workshop was organized from 21 to 24 February 2018 in Malaysia and attended by eight (8) participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Marine Fishery Research and Development Department (MFRDMD). The workshop was aimed at developing human resources on stock assessment through collection of relevant information of yelllowfin, bigeye and skipjack tunas’ in SSSs, and came up with the understanding of researcher on the steps of tuna stock assessments from CPUE Standardization, ASPIC, and Kobe Plot in SSSs. Moreover, the Workshop also came up with recommendations for future activity on stock assessment program of Joint Program on Tuna Research in Sulu and Sulawesi Seas during year 2019-2025.

CAPACITY BUILDING ON PORT STATE MEASURES IMPLEMENTS FOR THE FISHERY MANAGERS

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) organized the Regional Training on Port State Measures Implementation in Southeast Asia during 20 to 23 February 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand. There were Forty-six (46) fishery managers from SEAFDEC Member Countries except Lao PDR participated in the Port State Measures activities. This training focused on 1) preparation of national legal aspects, policy and institutional of PSM implementation, 2) PSMA inspection of vessels, and 3) lesson learned on PSM implementation in Thailand. The training came up with better understanding on implementation of Port State Measures in Member Countries, increasing of knowledge on Port State Measures and relevant activities as a tool to combat IUU Fishing, the situation and preparation on PSM implementation in the region and way to practical improvement of Port State Measures, and moreover the regional cooperation to support the implementation of PSM in the region.

FISHING VESSEL OPERATIONS TRAINING COURSE

Training Department in collaboration with the Vocational Education Commission of Thailand organized a four-month Training Course on Fishing Vessel Operations from 10 October 2017 to 15 February 2018. Ten (10) students from Tinsulanonda Fisheries College, Songkhla Province attended the training course which aimed to provide skills to students and share with them the relevant experiences and skills which they can use for their work in the future. The training course consisted of six subjects, namely: ship construction and stability, marine communication, laws and regulations of navigation, navigation technology practices, marine machinery technology and practices, and fishing gear technology and practices. Moreover, as part of the practical session, the students also had opportunity to conduct hands-on practice onboard the M.V. SEAFDEC and the M.V. Plalung, and had a study visit to various shipping facilities relevant to the training subjects to enhance their experience which is necessary for the future career.

SEAFDEC TWG FOR OCEANS PROJECT PARTICIPATES IN SFW WORKSHOP

The SEAFDEC and USAID Oceans and Fisheries Partnership project (USAID Oceans) are working together on strengthening regional cooperation to promote sustainable fisheries across Southeast Asia’ s diverse marine ecosystem. In this regard, the Technical Working Group (TWG) from SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) participated in the “Seafood Watch Standard and Assessment Methodology Workshop” organized by the Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans) in collaboration with Monterey Bay Aquarium/ Seafood Watch (SFW), Fisheries Resources Directorate, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), and partners, from 13 to 14 February 2018 in Manado, Indonesia. The two (2)-day Workshop aimed to: link Seafood Watch standards and human rights; increase awareness and capacity of key fishery manager, industry stakeholders and government to use Sea food Watch assessment methodology and improvement tools to better manage their fisheries; and discuss on improvement plans between industry and government to meet the Seafood Watch “Best Choice” and “Good Alternative” bars.

A total of 47 participants who are stakeholders and representatives from the Public Private Partnership (PPP) attended the Workshop, which came up with understanding on the procedure of assessment methodology and the slavery risk tool to support the implementation of Catch Documentation Traceability (CDT), EAFM activities and Human Welfare activities in demonstration and extension sites.Seafood Watch (SFW) program is part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium as a nonprofit organization to inspire conservation of the oceans. SFW program empowers consumers and businesses to choose seafood fished or farmed, using responsible methods that protect sea life and habitats, now and for the future generations. SWF widely recognizes and respects science-based recommendations, indicating which seafood items are considered Best Choice or Good Alternative, and which ones to avoid.

FISHERIES AGENCY OF JAPAN PAID VISIT TO TD

Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Office and Fisheries Agency of Japan, Mr.Takahide Tanaka paid an official visit to SEAFDEC Training Department on 7 February 2018. SEAFDEC Deputy Secretary-General and Deputy Chief of the Training Department welcomed the guest at the reception. Subsequently, a tour was made to view TD facilities such as fishing and engineering workshop and on board visit at M.V. SEAFDEC 2. Moreover, he visited and observed natural shrimp farm and mangrove area in Phasamutchedi District, Samut Prakan.
