TD EXHIBITION AT THAILAND NATIONAL FAIR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) joined the Thai Department of Fisheries in staging a fisheries exhibition at the annual national fair “Pramong Nomklao” organized this year at the Future Park Department Store in Pathumthani Province, just North of Bangkok. At the 10-days exhibition beginning 30 June 2017, TD presents fisheries activities under the theme of “Exploration of Marine Resources and Environment”. The sample of deep sea fisheries resources was presented in the exhibition through exploration equipments such as side scan sonar, remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Moreover, the audience could tried to control the ROV.  With the distribution of various technical publications, brochures, and fishery-related souvenirs to the audience, SEAFDEC visibility was promoted. All incomes collected from the fair will be donated to the famous Chulabhorn Research Institute for its cancer research.

PROMOTION OF SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES RESOURCES ENHANCEMENT MEASURE IN CAMBODIA

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) plans to implement the activities under the project of “Promotion of Sustainable Fisheries Resources Enhancement Measure in Critical Habitats/ Fishing Ground” in Angkual Village of Kep Province, Cambodia as pilot site. The pilot site aims to enhance the blue swimming crab stock in that area. In this regard, visiting Angkual fishing communities to obtain information on the current fisheries resources by meeting with staff of Fisheries Administrative (FiA) from Head Quarter and Kep Provincial during 28 to 30 June 2017 and meeting with staff of Community Fisheries (CFi) of Angkual Village during 2 to 6 July 2017 to identify the problem of the former activities. The Meeting came up with overviews of fisheries situation in Kep Province through problems of swimming crab resources stock in Angkual Village which will use for planning activities to enhance blue swimming crab resources in pilot site. The planning activities are as follows; 1) Introduction of technical hatching, 2) Establishment of gravid crab supply system, 3) Implementation of fisheries surveillance, 4) Introduction of penalties for fishermen operating illegally in conservation area, 5) Notifying fishermen of fishery regulation of conservation area and prevention of catch, 6) Introduction of penalties for fisher landing small crab, 7) Establishment of micro credit fund, and 8) Improvement of the administrative capacity of provincial government officials.

SEAFDEC TWG FOR THE USAID OCEANS ATTEND IN INTERGRATED STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION WORKSHOP IN INDONESIA

Three (3) SEAFDEC Technical Working Groups (TWG) for the USAID Oceans and Fisheries Partnership attended in “The USAID Ocean Integrated Stakeholders Consultation Workshop (ISCW)” in Manado, Indonesia from 19 to 21 June 2017. The three (3) days ISCW was organized by USAID Oceans in close collaboration with Fisheries Resources Directorate, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), and University of Sam Ratulangi (UNSRAT), Manado. There are stakeholder groups from national and local fisheries related government agencies, private sector, civil society organizations, and men and women fisher individual/ groups who engaged in the implementation of project activities on Workshop in Bitung Site.  . The Workshop came up with proceed with the development of the Sustainable Fisheries Management Plan (SFMP) through the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM). Moreover, the SEAFDEC TWG visited Bitung fishing port to observed landing and uploading process of one-night fishing and long-trip fishing by using purse seiner, handliner, and pole and liner.

SEAFDEC in collaboration with USAID conducted the project of “The USAID Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Ocean) to strengthen regional cooperation to combat illegal unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, promote sustainable fisheries and conserve marine biodiversity in the ASEAN. The partnership seeks to achieve these objectives through the development of a “Catch Documentation and Traceability System” (CDTS) that supports enhanced traceability, fisheries management, and human welfare. Working across ASEAN and Coral Triangle member Countries, USAID Oceans has established two learning sites in General Santos City, Philippines and Bitung, Indonesia. These sites will support the development, implementation, and testing of the CDTS and will serve as a hub for regional knowledge sharing for replication and expansion.

CAPACITY BUILDING ON EAFM FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENT

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) has been organized “The 60th Short-term Training Course of University Students on Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM)” from 6 to 16 June 2017 at Training Department, aims to build up and give awareness to young generations from Universities on “Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management” through responsible fishing for sustainable fisheries. Twenty eight (28) students from seven (7) universities in Thailand and an university in Japan such as Kasetsart University, Chulalongkron University, Burapha University (Bangsan Campas and Chantaburi Campas), Prince of Songkla University, Silpakorn University (Phechaburi Information Technology Campas), Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok (Chantaburi Campas), and Hokkaido University participated in training course. This training course is specifically designed for students to gain knowledge and experience outside the Universities and also they will gain knowledge in theory and practice on land and shipboard about fishery activities. Besides, they are going to survey fishery community in Rayong Province. All of these activities will make the new generations to be more empower and develop in the future.

IMPLEMENTATION OF FISHERY MANAGEMENT IN LAO PDR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) in collaboration with The Department of Livestock and Fisheries (DLF), Lao PDR conducted the meeting to establish “Fisheries Management Committee” (FMC) from 22 to 26 May 2017 as an implementation activity of “Co-management/ Community-based Fisheries Management” in Nam Xoung Reservoir. Furthermore, the meeting announced the start of the project and the set-up of activity.

The implementation of “Co-management/ Community-based Fisheries Management” in Nam Xoung Reservoir, Lao PDR has been supported by Japanese Trust Fund during 2017-2019 under the project of “Enhancement the Compilation and Utilization of Fishery Statistics and Information for Sustainable Development and Management of Fisheries in Southeast Asian Region.”
