In Thailand, there are many brackish water sectors which are consisting of estuaries, beach ridges, and intertidal mangrove swamps, intersecting rivers and numerous winding saline creeks, is an important component of the artisanal fisheries. In Thailand, estuary ecosystems provide the local people with a variety of goods and services upon which they all depend, including food and income. Unfortunately, many estuaries in Thailand are under increasing pressure from unsustainable utilization. The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) has taken up this challenge to building up and give awareness to young generation from Universities on the sustainable utilization of the fisheries resource around the mouth of rivers as well as estuary ecosystems. This training course has been specifically designed for university students to gain knowledge and experience outside the Universities, The students are expected to understand the function and importance of estuary ecosystem around mouth of rivers in Thailand, the sustainable utilization of the fisheries resource will be highlighted for the young generation of this training course.

Objectives :

  1. To gain knowledge and experience on the real situation and function of estuary ecosystems around the mouth of rivers
  2. To gain experience on the basically of responsible fishing gears and practices
  3. To understand and make use of natural indicators for water quality monitoring and fisheries resources conditions
  4. To build up network among students from different universities as well as to strengthen the student’s attitude on the team work approach

Target Participants :

Selected of Forty students from different Universities, students must have basic knowledge on the science of fisheries, marine science, aquaculture or other related of major subject.

Training methodologies :

The training is composed of in class lecturers and discussions, practices, field trip surveys and shipboard training cruise.

  • In class Lectures and Discussions
    • Fishery resources and its utilization
    • Mangrove ecosystems and its function
    • Basic fishery oceanographic survey
    • Basic responsible fishing gears and practices

  • Practical sessions
    • Rope and Knotting
    • Simple fishing gears construction

  • Field Trip Surveys
    • Cruise survey along the mouth of Chao Phaya river (Samut prakan province), Tha-chin river (Samut-sakorn province) ,Mae-klong river (Samut songkarm province) and Bang pakong river (Chachengsao province)

  • Shipboard Training
    • Responsible fishing demonstrations and operations
    • Basic fishery oceanographic survey
