Background and Rationale

Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing threatens fisheries sustainability, weakens governance, and erodes food security in Southeast Asia. Combating IUU fishing requires regional cooperation and, adoption of advanced Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance (MCS) technologies.

In alignment with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, this workshop aims to promote regional dialogue, capacity development, and regional collaboration to address these challenges. Hosted by SEAFDEC with Canadian funding support, the event will engage fisheries officials from ASEAN Member States (AMSs), technical experts to build a stronger foundation for regional cooperation on MCS to combat IUU fishing.

Objectives

• Sharing information on the regional implementation of combating IUU fishing
• Introducing and promoting the adoption of innovative MCS technologies for combating IUU fishing
• Strengthening institutional cooperation on implementation for combating IUU fishing in the region

Expected Outputs

• Updated information on the regional implementation of combating IUU fishing
• Demonstrations and documentation on MCS technology and innovations for combating IUU fishing (electronic reporting, satellite tracking, AI-driven analytics, etc.)
• Initiation strengthened technical and institutional cooperation on implementation to combat IUU fishing
