SEAFDEC MEMBER COUNTRIES VISIT TO INTRODUCE THE OCEANS AND FISHERIES PROJECT

The Oceans and Fisheries technical team of the project from USAID and SEAFDEC made a series of country visits to Brunei Darussalam (13-14 June 2016), Myanmar( 20-21 June 2016), Cambodia (23-24 June 2016) and Lao PDR (30 June to 1 July 2013) to meet with their competent fisheries authorities for further discussion on the project and updates of the progress made including meeting with the Technical Working Group (TWG) and relevant personal and also visit fish landing sites/ ports.

The Oceans and Fisheries Project under supported by USAID which have fully supported by all SEAFDEC Council Directors in the 48th Council Meeting in Nha Trang, Viet Nam to be implemented under ASSP/FCG Program of SEAFDEC.

ESSENTIAL EAFM TRAINING OF TRAINERS FOR MYANMAR

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) organized the Essential Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (E-EAFM) in MYANMAR from 27 June to 1 July 2016 for ten selected fisheries officers who have good skill and can be EAFM trainer in the future. The training course developed the skill and made participants confident with sustainably guiding E-EAFM concept, strengthen understanding on the E-EAFM in each module through practice them to be EAFM trainers.

CAPACITY BUILDING FOR TD STAFF ON GENDER MAINSTREAMING

Six staff from the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) who engaged with gender activities was invited from Oxfam to participation a two-day workshop on gender mainstreaming at Oxfam office in Bangkok, Thailand from 21 to 22 June 2016, aims to enhance knowledge, better understanding and capacity building on gender mainstreaming which will be integrated gender aspect to SEAFDEC project in the future. 

Oxfam is an international confederation of 17 organizations working in approximately 94 countries worldwide to find solutions to poverty and what it considers injustice around the world. Oxfam is implementing a program on Gender Transformative and Responsible Agribusiness Investments (GRAISEA) to shares common visions in promoting gender transformative and responsible business practices in the selected value chains of fisheries and other agribusinesses. 

SEAFDEC CONVENES THE REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON PILOTING E-EAFM LEAD MATERIALS

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) convened the “Regional Workshop on Piloting E-EAFM LEAD Materials” from 27 to 29 June 2016 in Rayong Province, Thailand, with funding support from the FAO/GEF/SEAFDEC/REBYC-II CTI Project. The Workshop was attended by fifteen (15) policy level participants from REBYC participating countries, representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), REBYC-II CTI, IMA International, SEAFDEC Secretariat and Training Department. The Workshop was aimed at testing the developed LEAD materials in a realistic LEAD workshop situation and obtaining feedback required for fine-tuning and finalization of the materials.

The Workshop discussed the materials including the brochures, videos, posters, PowerPoint presentations, conversations, keywords, and reference materials. With comments from the Workshop, the LEAD materials would be improved to build the knowledge and skills among policy makers of REBYC Countries on the EAFM, to motivate policy level changes by accommodating the EAFM concept in respective national policies, and also provide information for leadership in its implementation. Furthermore, the Workshop suggested that the improved LEAD materials would be introduced to the SEAFDEC Program Committee during its 39th Meeting in Indonesia in November 2016.

ON-SITE TOT ON DATA ANALYSIS AND EXTENSION IN VIET NAM

The SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish) of Viet Nam organized “On-site Training of Trainer on Data Analysis and Extension to Promote Co-management in Viet Nam from 15 to 17 June 2016 at Da Nang City, Viet Nam. The training course aims to support 34 fishery staff at provincial level who is the key persons of co-management in the communities with will utilization of data to formulate the fisheries resources management plan and implementation. Moreover, the course subject also imparted knowledge on extension strategy and components which participants can apply to promote co-management in their province.
