Gender Integration in Fisheries

The Fisheries sector is often seen as male-dominant while women are mainly considered in post-harvest and market. 

Therefore, Gender integration is needed in support of equal opportunities integration of gender aspects should be promoted to ensure better recognition and enhancement of the roles of women at regional, national, and local levels including governments, communities, and the private sector in the process.

Recommendation to Integrate Gender in Fisheries

               1. Gender Analysis to identify role, responsibilities, problems, needs, capacities, interest and level of participation of men and women in fisheries for the planning process

               2. Implement 

                           - Practical needs (Immediate needs – or the need in short term) Ex. Provide skill-building.

                           - Strategic Interest (long-term change) – lead to changing roles, status, and position. Ex. More women as leaders in the fishery sector

               3. Gender sensitivity indicator for project monitor and evaluation Ex. No. or % of male or female participating in the project, Social status of women and men
