The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Thailand, is conducting a field visit during 28–30 October 2026 in Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, and Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, Thailand. The activity is implemented under the Japanese Trust Fund VII (JTF7)-supported project “Improving Fishers’ Livelihood and Fisheries Co-Management in Inland and Coastal Small-Scale Fisheries.”
Following the Indo-Pacific mackerel supply chain study and stakeholder consultation, the activity focuses on improving onboard fish handling and preservation practices and exploring alternative market opportunities. SEAFDEC and DOF officers inspected small-scale gillnet fishing vessels to assess the feasibility of introducing appropriate fish handling techniques and preservation equipment. The team also visited Nissui, a frozen seafood company, to identify product quality standards, purchasing requirements, and potential market linkages. In addition, interviews with Nissui’s fish suppliers were included to better understand seafood supply chain operations, including fish collection, handling, transportation, and delivery to the company.
The findings will guide practical interventions to maintain fish freshness and quality, strengthen fishers’ bargaining power, expand market opportunities, and improve small-scale fishing livelihoods in Thailand.
