SEAFDEC/TD Organizes Regional Consultation on Advancing Small-Scale Fisheries

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized a two-day “Regional Consultation on Advancing Small-Scale Fisheries: Reducing Costs and Environmental Impact.” The event, running from 27 to 28 May 2025, is being held at the SEAFDEC/TD facility here in Samut Prakan.

The consultation had 41 participants, including representatives from ASEAN Member States (AMSs) and SEAFDEC/TD personnel. The primary objectives were to collaboratively explore and develop strategies aimed at enhancing fuel efficiency and significantly reducing carbon emissions within the small-scale fisheries sector. Furthermore, the discussions focused on improving onboard fish handling techniques and practices to minimize post-harvest losses and enhance the quality of catch for small-scale fishers.

Throughout the two-day event, attendees work towards identifying key strategies and initiatives. Expected outcomes include the formulation of practical approaches to optimize fuel consumption, reduce the environmental footprint of fishing operations, and improve fish handling and waste minimization across the ASEAN region. A key focus of the consultation was also the promotion of food security and nutrition through the more efficient utilization of raw materials sourced from small-scale fisheries.

This important regional gathering is an activity conducted under SEAFDEC/TD’s “Research and Dissemination of Sustainable Fishing Technology Project,” highlighting the organization’s ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable and economically viable fishing practices in Southeast Asia.
