On 26 October 2026, The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) participated in the session “Pathways to a Regenerative Blue Economy,” organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) during Asia-Pacific Ocean Week 2026 at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok, Thailand. The session explored approaches to restoring marine ecosystems while supporting sustainable economic development. Discussions focused on ecosystem-based fisheries management, small-scale fisheries, inclusive governance, equitable benefits, and regional collaboration, highlighting policy, financing, and capacity development as essential enabling conditions.
Ms. Jariya Sornkliang, Fisheries Management Researcher, represented SEAFDEC and presented its initiatives supporting a regenerative blue economy, focusing on ecosystem restoration, community-based fisheries management, small-scale fisheries supply chain improvement, and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI). She highlighted SEAFDEC’s efforts under BOBLME II, JTF, and other projects to promote sustainable livelihoods, improve market access, strengthen community participation, and ensure equitable benefit-sharing. She emphasized that a regenerative blue economy aims to restore marine ecosystems, enhance resource value, strengthen community resilience, and ensure equitable benefits for all.
