The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Thailand, organized the Kick-off Workshop on Inland Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (Inland EAFM) on 29–30 June 2026 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand.
The workshop brought together officials from the DOF and staff of SEAFDEC/TD with a total of 10 participants (8 women and 2 men), to introduce the Inland EAFM project framework, objectives, implementation plan, and expected outputs. As the first initiative to develop and apply the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) in inland fisheries, the project aims to establish a comprehensive Inland EAFM framework over the next five years. The workshop also sought to build a common understanding of Inland EAFM concepts and approaches, strengthen coordination among implementing partners, and discuss and refine the inland EAFM training materials.
Throughout the two-day workshop, participants reviewed the current status, opportunities, and challenges of inland fisheries management in Thailand and exchanged views on the application of EAFM principles to inland fisheries. Group discussions were conducted to review and refine the Inland EAFM training toolkit and presentation materials, which will serve as key resources for future capacity-building activities and the pilot implementation of Inland EAFM in selected areas.
The workshop marked the official launch of the Inland EAFM project and established a foundation for continued collaboration between SEAFDEC/TD and the Department of Fisheries in advancing the development and implementation of the Inland EAFM framework. The outcomes of the workshop will contribute to strengthening sustainable inland fisheries management through the application of ecosystem-based approaches in Thailand.
