SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized “The 64th Short-term Training Course on Ecosystem-Based Fisheries for Sustainable Fisheries Resources Management” from 13 to 21 May 2024 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand. There were 26 students from seven universities in Thailand such as Burapha University (Bangsaen and Chanthaburi Campus), Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Maejo University, Prince of Songkla University, and Silpakorn University (Phetchaburi IT campus) including two universities from Japan such as Hokkaido University, and Tokai University participated in this training. The training session consists of in-class lectures, practice, and a fishery community field trip survey. The lectures were focused on oceanography in the Gulf of Thailand; marine pollution; causes, Effects, and remedial solutions; awareness to combat IUU fishing; fish handling and preservation techniques; extension media in fishery; ecosystem approach to fishery management (EAFM); safety onboard, personal survival, and safety at sea techniques; introduction to coral reef ecology and biodiversity; coral reef benthic identification; fishing gear in Thailand; and socioeconomic in fishery community. While practice sessions were focused on ship handling, personal survival, and safety at sea techniques; coral reef survey techniques; reef benthic survey images analysis using CPCe software; rope, and knotting. The students were expected to gain knowledge and experience in the above-mentioned subjects. Moreover, they can build networks among students from different universities. This training is an activity under the project “Promotion on Strengthening of SEAFDEC Visibility and Enhancing Human Capacity Building”.
