Training Course on the Principles and Methods of Quantitative Echosounder EK80

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized a “Training Course on the Principles and Methods of Quantitative Echosounder EK80 to Conduct Fisheries Acoustic Survey” from 21 to 24 March 2023 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand. There were nine researchers from SEAFDEC/TD attending this training. Two resource persons were invited 1) Mr. Freddy Supriyadi from Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD) and MMAF, Indonesia, and 2) Mr. Mohammad Fadli Yahya from Research Institute for Marine Fisheries, MMAF, Indonesia. The training aims 1) to build the capacity of researchers in using research equipment, Quantitative Echosounder EK80, to conduct fisheries acoustic Survey, and 2) to calibrate M.V. SEAFDEC 2’s Quantitative Echosounder EK80. In the end, the participants understood using EK80 and useful to carry out the survey for SEAFDEC Member countries in advance. This training is an activity under the project “Sustainable Utilization of Fisheries Resources and Resources Enhancement in Southeast Asia”.

Due to its high precision and reliability, the Quantitative Echosounder (EK80) system is one of the most widely used systems in the fishery resources survey. The EK80 can provide accurate and detailed information about the distribution and size of fish populations. The EK80 is an important tool in the management of fishery resources.
