Workshop on Sustainable Fisheries Management in Rawai, Satun Province, Thailand

SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) held the “EAFM Start-up Workshop for the Fisheries Management Unit (FMU)” in Rawai, Satun Province, Thailand from 24 to 25 April 2025. This workshop built upon the initiatives outlined at the 2024 Phuket meeting and represented a significant advancement toward sustainable fisheries management in Thailand. Rawai, with its vibrant fishing community, faces challenges such as fisheries and environmental pressures. In light of these challenges, the workshop brought together 26 participants, including fisheries officers and local stakeholders, to collaboratively define the FMU’s scope and identify key community members involved in this initiative. The group comprised 10 representatives from the Department of Fisheries (DOF), 1 from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), 3 members from SEAFDEC, and 12 local community members, highlighting a strong collaborative effort in this critical initiative. Furthermore, the workshop established processes for collecting and analyzing baseline data, which are essential for informed decision-making in the upcoming EAFM planning session scheduled for July 2025. This collaborative approach positions Rawai as a learning site for the EAFM Component under the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem Project Phase II (BOBLME II) Project. By integrating local knowledge with scientific data, this initiative aims to enhance sustainable fisheries practices and community-based resource management, establishing Rawai as a model for effective marine conservation efforts.
