Training of Trainer (TOT) for Purse Seine and Advanced Technology

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) recently hosted a specialized course, “Training of Trainer (TOT) for Purse Seine and Advanced Technology,” running from October 6 to 16, 2025. This program was organized by Department of Fisheries Malaysia and funded by Department of Public Service Malaysia and was attended by ten participants from the Department of Fisheries Malaysia. The primary objective of the training was ambitious: to significantly increase the competency of both existing and preparatory instructors. By equipping them with advanced skills and knowledge in vessel and purse seine net operations, the course aimed to meet the challenge of producing modern fishermen who can efficiently operate all necessary fisheries equipment using appropriate methods and procedures, in full compliance with the Fisheries Act 1985.

The training was strategically split between two locations in Thailand to maximize learning effectiveness. The theoretical lecture session took place at the SEAFDEC/TD in Samut Prakan province, where participants learned about key areas including the Introduction to purse seine fishing and net design in Southeast Asia, Deck machinery, and proper Fish handling. For the crucial practical session, the group moved to Pattani province. The participants engaged in a two-day, one-night practical operation onboard the Norlapprasert vessel to experience the entire purse seine process. This comprehensive blend of in-depth classroom instruction and direct, practical experience successfully reinforced the required knowledge base, ensuring all instructors left with enhanced skills in vessel and purse seine operations.
