SEAFDEC/TD Empowers Next Generation of Fisheries Experts with 66th Short-Term Training Course

The Training Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC/TD) officially launched “The 66th Short-term Training Course for University Students”. This program ran from 19 to 29 May 2026 under the specialized theme “Ecosystem-Based Fisheries for Sustainable Fisheries Resources Management”. A total of 44 students (15 males and 29 females) from 10 educational institutions across Thailand, alongside participants from Japan’s Hokkaido University, attended the course.

The comprehensive training methodology was composed of in-class lectures, group discussions, and practical sessions. Participants received a dynamic blend of theoretical knowledge and practical training centered on responsible fishing practices. Key field activities included training in small vessel operations, safety procedures, and survival techniques at sea. Furthermore, students acquired vital knowledge regarding marine fisheries resources data collection within coral reef ecosystems. Participants also developed practical skills in designing questionnaires to gather socio-economic data from local fishing communities. These diverse modules worked together to enhance the essential knowledge and skills required for sustainable fisheries resources management. The program was also carefully designed to enhance the teamwork of students for good collaboration and efficiency. Through this immersive experience, students were fully equipped to support sustainable fisheries initiatives in their future careers.

Besides gaining knowledge and experience, the students also made new friends and built connections with peers from various Thai universities and Hokkaido University in Japan. SEAFDEC/TD is pleased to support this new generation, who will become the future of the fisheries industry, and to help them care more about responsible and sustainable fishing.
