The Abandoned, Lost or otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear and Marking of Fishing Gear Meeting

SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized “The Regional Technical Meeting on Responsible Fishing: The Abandoned, Lost or otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) and Marking of Fishing Gear” from 15 to 17 November 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting aims to enhance human resources capacity building on the ALDFG and Fishing Gear Marking, update and share information on the national policies, research activities and best practices on the ALDFG and Fishing Gear Marking, including identifying the challenge and way forward to combatting ALDFG and promotion on the marking of fishing gear in Southeast Asia. Forty-five participants who are fishing gear technologists and researchers from ASEAN Member States (AMSs), Fishing Technologists from SEAFDEC/TD, IFRDMD, MFRDMD, and other international organizations such as FAO and UNEP participated in the meeting. The expected output is the technical report on international, regional, and national policies on ALDFG and Marking of Fishing Gear including best practices, research, trial, and awareness building on ALDFG and Marking of Fishing Gear, through a summary of the way forward to combatting ALDFG and promoting the marking of fishing gear in Southeast Asia which will subsequently be used for knowledge sharing and dissemination among AMSs. This meeting is an activity under the project “Responsible Fishing Technology and Practice”.
