SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized the “Webinar on Fishing Port Standards and Fishing Port Management” on 20 June 2025, conducted via Zoom under the project of “Sustainable Management of Fisheries, Marine Living Resources and Their Habitats in the Bay of Bengal Region for the Benefit of Coastal States and Communities (BOBLME II)”, specifically under Component 3, which focuses on reducing coastal and marine pollution and improving the health of shared ecosystems.
This activity was carried out in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organization (BOBP-IGO) and regional partners. The objectives were to exchange knowledge and experiences related to fishing port standards and management, with an emphasis on waste management practices at fishing ports in the Bay of Bengal countries. The webinar also aimed to foster dialogue on effective and practical approaches to enhance waste management in fishing harbors.
There were 27 participants attending the webinar. They shared updates on the current situation and the urgent need to address waste and marine pollution in their respective fishing ports. Countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand actively contributed, demonstrating strong cooperation.
In addition, representatives from FAO,India presented lessons learned and experiences regarding fishing port standards and management, as well as the responsibilities of Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Thailand also shared its progress in enforcing environmental laws and regulations related to fishing port management under the authority of the Department of Fisheries.
The session concluded with a renewed commitment to continued collaboration and knowledge sharing, ensuring that the insights gained will inform future initiatives to strengthen waste management and mitigate marine pollution in fishing ports across the region.
