Baseline Survey Assessment of Fuel Consumption, Vessel Performance (Propeller), and Renewable Energy (Solar Cell) at the Pilot Site

The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), and the Faculty of International Maritime Studies, Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus, recently carried out a field survey from 24 to 30 May 2026 in a fishing community of Bang Saphan District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. The survey focused on collecting data related to energy use, fuel consumption, and operational conditions of small-scale fishing boats operating in the area, and included studying the feasibility of using renewable energy to preserve fish freshness for small-scale fisheries. This survey activity is under the Research and Dissemination of Sustainable Fishing Technology project, with financial support from the Japanese Trust Fund VII.

The field mission was jointly led by the Marine Engineering Section of the Training and Research Supporting Division, together with Asst. Prof. Prachakon Kaewkhiaw, D.Eng., Dean of the Faculty of International Maritime Studies, Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus, and staff from the Chumphon Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center, Department of Fisheries, Thailand. The team worked closely with local fishermen to gather technical information on fishing boat operations, engine performance, energy efficiency, preservation methods, and ways to apply renewable energy within the fishing community. The collected data will serve as an important foundation for future research.

The study is expected to contribute to the development of more efficient and energy-saving propeller systems suitable for small-scale fishing vessels, as well as the use of renewable energy to maintain the quality of fish. This collaborative initiative highlights the commitment of the participating institutions to advancing sustainable fisheries, promoting energy-efficient technologies, and supporting environmentally responsible fishing practices in coastal communities throughout the region.
