SEAFDEC Strengthens Gender Equality Commitment with Orientation for New Officers

The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) has underscored its dedication to gender equality by conducting a comprehensive Gender Mainstreaming Orientation for its newly appointed officers. This initiative reinforces SEAFDEC’s ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality both within the organization and across its fisheries and aquaculture projects in the region. The orientation sessions took place on 1 May 2025 for new staff at the SEAFDEC/TD office and on 7 May 2025 for new staff at the SEAFDEC Secretariat in Bangkok. A total of 32 participants, comprising 19 women and 13 men, engaged in focused discussions covering gender integration strategies, relevant workplace policies, and SEAFDEC’s existing gender-responsive initiatives. Key aspects highlighted during the sessions included the critical importance of embedding gender perspectives into all levels of SEAFDEC’s work, including its programs, research endeavors, and policy development. This aligns directly with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5, which champions Gender Equality. By fostering a more inclusive and equitable work culture, this orientation aims to ensure equal opportunities and rights for all individuals within SEAFDEC. Ultimately, this will contribute to more effective and sustainable fisheries management practices throughout Southeast Asia, with the full and meaningful participation of all stakeholders.
