The 9th Global Conference on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries (GAF9): Transforming Aquaculture and Fisheries for Gender Justice

Two officers from SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) and one officer from Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD) participated in the 9th Global Conference on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries (GAF9), held on 1–3 October 2025 at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Pathum Thani, Thailand, under the theme “Transforming Aquaculture and Fisheries for Gender Justice.”

The conference, organized by the Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries Section (GAFS) in collaboration with AIT, aimed to promote equitable collaboration among stakeholders, advance gender-focused research and practice, and highlight the vital roles of women in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

SEAFDEC actively contributed to GAF9 through the following engagements:

  • Presenting the articles “Boosting Gender Roles in Southeast Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture for Addressing Policy Gaps” and “Exploring Indonesian Women’s Contribution to Inland Fisheries in the Context of the Blue Economy.”
  • Organizing a special session on “SEAFDEC’s Initiative to Advance Gender Equality in Fisheries and Aquaculture in Southeast Asia.”
  • Participating as a panelist in the FAO special session on “Exploring and Expanding Understandings of Gender Identity and Expression in Fisheries.”

GAF9 served as an important platform for sharing global knowledge and experiences on gender in fisheries and aquaculture, while also strengthening understanding of gender inclusivity in community fisheries. SEAFDEC’s contributions demonstrated its commitment as a gender-sensitive organization in promoting gender equality and social inclusion in the region.
