SEAFDEC researcher, Saruttaya Jaroonpongsawat, was honored with the “Young Fisheries Acoustician Award (AFAS 2025)” — recognizing excellent young researchers in fisheries acoustics for their outstanding presentation

SEAFDEC/TD participated in the 18th Annual Meeting of the Asian Fisheries Acoustics Society (AFAS 2025) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and proudly received a young fisheries acoustician award.

During the AFAS 2025: The International Conference On Underwater Acoustic Technology and Education For Sustainable Fisheries in Asia held from 2 – 5 November 2025 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Ms. Saruttaya Jaroonpongsawat, Fishing Gear Technologist from SEAFDEC/TD, attended and delivered a presentation in Session 4: Theory and Target Strength, Acoustics in Offshore Wind Power and Next-generation Aquaculture, under the title Initial Efforts on Target Strength (TS) Measurement Using Swimbladder Imaging for Fisheries Resource Assessment in Southeast Asia, which introduce the challenges in conducting acoustic surveys in Southeast Asian waters. She shared SEAFDEC’s initial work in developing appropriate TS measurement methods for regional conditions using swimbladder to apply with the theoretical modeling approaches, and identifying ways forward for future research.

In addition, Ms. Saruttaya was honored with the “Young Fisheries Acoustician Award (AFAS 2025)” — recognizing excellent young researchers in fisheries acoustics for their outstanding presentation by researchers under 40.
