M.V. SEAFDEC Mission on Deployment of Tsunami Buoy in Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean

The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) in cooperation with the National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC) under the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Ministry of Interior (DDPM) deployed and replaced a new unit of the Tsunami Warning System as the SAIC Tsunami Buoy (STB) in the Indian Ocean during 16-25 November 2020 and the Easy-to-Deploy (ETS) in the Andaman Sea during 27-29 November 2020. In this occasion, the official event of this mission was opened by a representative from DDPM on 16 November 2020 at Phuket Deep Sea Port, Phuket Province, Thailand before M.V. SEAFDEC conduct her mission.

SEAFDEC supported NDWC to deployment and maintenance of the Tsunami Warning Buoy since 2006. The SAIC Tsunami Buoy (STB) system is the only commercially available tsunami buoy that has undergone independent testing by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and which was found to meet or exceed NOAA Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART®) operational specifications and standards. The process works of this tsunami buoy by 1) monitoring the seabed changes in the pressure, 2) the detector will send signals to the transmitter on the sea surfaces buoy, 3) The transmitter on the buoy will send information to the satellite, and 4) the information is sent to the early warning system on the land station.
