SEAFDEC/TD Joins the OceanLitter Programme Global Task Force Training and Workshop, Online attendance

The SEAFDEC Training Department, represented by Mr. Santiphong Putsa (Fishing Gear Technologist), joined the OceanLitter Programme Global Task Force Training and Workshop under the theme “From Commitment to Action on Marine Plastic Litter from Sea-Based Sources.” by online attendance. This event jointly organized by The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) from 12–14 November 2025 at the IMO Headquarters in London, United Kingdom.

Mr. Santiphong Putsa sumitted an abstract and presented a poster titled “Advancing the Mitigation of ALDFG through ROV Deployment: Evidence from a Field Demonstration in Rayong, Thailand.” This work is under the collaborative “Ghost Fishing in the Global South” project between SEAFDEC Training Department, the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), and Green-Bay Company.

The event brought together representatives from more than 30 member states, strategic partners, donors, and industry stakeholders. The workshop aimed to strengthen global efforts in reducing marine plastic litter originating from sea-based activities.

Throughout the programme, participants deepened their knowledge of international instruments, conventions, and science-based information related to marine plastic litter. The workshop also highlighted available technologies for monitoring, preventing, and reducing plastic waste at sea. A special focus was placed on promoting women’s leadership in shipping and fisheries, while also fostering collaboration among national, regional, and global partners to advance joint solutions to this growing environmental challenge.

Participation helped improve understanding of international frameworks and scientific approaches for addressing marine plastic litter. It also provided exposure to new technologies and innovative methods for monitoring and retrieving ALDFG, strengthened collaboration with global partners working on marine debris, and increased SEAFDEC’s visibility by sharing project findings and best practices.
