SEAFDEC/TD Showcases Marine Science Expertise at 8th Marine Science Conference in Trang

SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) actively participated in the 8th Marine Science Academic Conference, held from 25 to 27 June, at the Rua Rasada Hotel in Trang Province. The conference, themed “Science, Technology and Innovation Towards a Changing Sea,” emphasized the critical link between scientific research and effective marine policy. It was organized by Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (RUTS) in collaboration with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Marine Science Association of Thailand.
SEAFDEC/TD’s participation underscored its ongoing commitment to addressing challenges within marine ecosystems and fisheries. Nine researchers from SEAFDEC/TD contributed significantly to the conference through a series of oral and poster presentations, sharing valuable research, case studies, and innovative approaches as follows:

• Socioeconomic Change in Coastal Fishing Communities of Chumphon Province, Thailand by Ms. Thanyalak Suasi.
• Understanding Adaptation Capacity from the Impact of Climate Change and Other Stressors for Fishing Communities: A Case Study, Toh Balew Indigenous Fishing Community, Koh Lanta, Krabi Province, Thailand by Ms. Jariya Sornkliang.
• Introduction of FAO/GEF BOBLME Phase 2 Project Role of SEAFDEC to Combat IUU Fishing in Southeast Asia by Ms. Suwanee Sayan.
• Dispersion of Fish Larvae Around the Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs): Evidence from a Field Experiment in Trat Bay, Thailand by Ms. Nathacha Changphetphol.
• Advancing ALDFG Mitigation Through ROV Deployment: Insights from a Field Demonstration in Rayong, Thailand by Mr. Santiphong Putsa.

• Assessing the Potential of Community Fishery Products Through Cost-Benefit Analysis: A Case Study of Processing Groups in Krabi Province by Ms. Thanyalak Suasi.
• Application of Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management and Co-Management for Livelihood Improvement in Ban Hat Sai Khao, Ranong Province, Thailand by Ms. Rattana Tiaye.
• Development of a Thermal Pyrolysis System for Converting Marine Plastic Debris into Fuel: A Community-Based Solution for Coastal Fisheries in Rayong Province by Mr. Khunthawat Manomayitthikarn.
During the conference, Ms. Rattana Tiaye of SEAFDEC/TD received the Excellent Work Award for her poster presentation. Her work focused on the “Application of Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management and Co-Management for Livelihood Improvement in Ban Hat Sai Khao, Ranong Province, Thailand.” This recognition highlights SEAFDEC/TD’s dedication to innovative, community-centered approaches in fisheries and impactful marine resource management.
SEAFDEC/TD expressed its appreciation to the academic institutions and government agencies for their support in advancing sustainable marine and coastal resource conservation. The team emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and the public in addressing complex ocean challenges. The conference served as a valuable platform to strengthen these partnerships and foster a shared vision for a more sustainable future, reaffirming SEAFDEC/TD’s dedication to science-based, collaborative approaches in fisheries sustainability and aquatic resource management.
