Regional Workshop on Enhancing Policies and Countermeasures Against IUU Fishing in Southeast Asia

SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized the “Regional Workshop on Enhancing Policies and Countermeasures Against IUU Fishing in Southeast Asia” from 6 to 8 October 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. The primary aims of the workshop were to provide an update on the implementation status of the National Plans of Action to Combat IUU Fishing (NPOA-IUU) across ASEAN Member States (AMSs). Additionally, the workshop seeks to improve understanding of international, regional, and national countermeasures and to address urgent concerns related to the prevention and elimination of IUU fishing in the region such as the global information exchange system (GIES), Bali Strategy for effective implementation of the PSMA, PSMA indicators to quantify implementation and/or effectiveness, and voluntary guidelines for transshipment. Thirty-eight participants who were representative of AMSs, relevant staff of the SEAFDEC Secretariat, and SEAFDEC/TD, including other regional and international organizations. The workshop came up with an update on the implementation status of NPOA-IUU across AMSs, improved understanding of international concerns related to IUU fishing countermeasures, and initial recommendations from AMSs and content on ASEAN Voluntary Guidelines for Transshipment. This workshop is an activity under the ASEAN-JICA Capacity Building Project on IUU Fishing Countermeasures in Southeast Asia.
